Splendid fun celebrating Kilbey's birthday (check the 'people' page on the main site if you're not sure who he is) trawling through the earlyish career of Athens, Georgia's finest (discounting both the B52's and Pylon, I'm afraid) with some best buds and some Brewer's Gold. Who could ask for more? Stretching the definition of what constitutes SftBH (which after all is Me, Jayems and Gib and whoever else we damn well please), we finally decided that it was probably a Picturehouse gig (see www.picturehousebigband.com for other guff on such matters) interspersed with the odd foray into gods kitchen - after all, everyone bar drummer Reado has been through our ranks. It's not that we're necessarily exclusive about who we play with, it's just that we haven't found anyone better... ;D Anyhoo, a realy good set that built and built until it ended with a Reado be-vocalled 'Sweetness Follows' ending in a tribal drum workout matched up with James attempting to coax feedback out of a distortion pedal and a musicman amp while Gib thrummed away on a detuned bass, the Steves thrashed 'D' chords and I twaddled away on the bouzouki. Obviously pushing the envelope of an 'acoustic' night there, then. The sell-out crowd, most of whom had clearly come to REM slightly later than we had, were suitably mystified but audibly appreciative (especially the small pocket of Gibbon-lovers, who broke into spontaneous applause at his very mention). An honourable mention for part-time SftBH-er David Booth, who took the stage shortly after us with AloneMe colleague Sarah Springett - the pair of them rocked their way through both 'Radio Free Europe' and 'Shiny Happy People' with the joi de vivre of the true music fan it is always a joy to watch.
